Mother’s Day

This week we celebrate Mother’s Day, a day which has been set aside to pay special tribute to that dear lady who has done so much for the family. It really should not take a special day to remind us to honor mothers but I am glad that there is a day like this.

There are several stories of how Mother’s Day began including one that goes back to the times of the ancient Greeks who held festivities in honor of the mothers of gods. There are those who say the early Christians celebrated a mother’s festival in honor of Mary.

But it was in 1907 that Anna M. Jarvis began a movement to set up a national Mother’s Day in honor of her mother and then in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as a national holiday in honor of mothers. This is the day that is still celebrated today.

Whatever you do on this day take time to tell your mother how much she means to you and how grateful you are for the many sacrifices she made for you. Tell her how much you love her. And if you are one of those whose mother has gone home to be with the Lord, remember to thank God for her influence in your life. Be thankful that God saw fit to give you a wonderful mother.

As pastor let me say to all of our mothers, Happy Mother’s Day and Thank you for being a godly mother and a great Christian influence to all around you.
